Channa dal chutney is commonly used in Karnataka. It is a quick recipe and perfect for kids lunch box to be used with idly / dosa.
Ingredients
-
1/2 cup Channa dal
-
1 onion small size
-
1 pod garlic ( optional )
-
1 lemon size tamarind ( as per taste )
-
Rock salt
-
1/4 cup grated fresh coconut
-
2 Red chilli
-
1 inch fresh ginger
Method
- Dry roast Channa dal till they are brown
- Soak the tamarind in hot water for 10-15 mins and extract the pulp and keep aside
- Grind the following - Channa dal, red chilli, onion, fresh coconut, garlic, ginger, salt and tamarind pulp to a fine paste. Check the taste and adjust the chilli / salt / tamarind as per your taste if needed
- Tip : If coconut was refrigerated, soak it in hot water for 3-4 mins before grinding. The coconut releases its oils when it's cold and the chutney will seem greasy if used as is from the refrigerator.
- Optionally you can add dry tadka of mustard and enjoy.
- You can also use roasted peanuts in place of Channa dal and make peanut chutney too.
