Matra Chaat - oil-free, homemade snack!

Matra Chaat is a famous street food from Delhi. It is a semi-gravy dish made with dried green peas. Try making this simple, oil-free snack at home! It is not only spicy and tangy, but a yummy way to have raw veggies. It could also be had along with roti just like your regular curry.

For variation, you could play around with flavours – try adding dried mint leaves powder or green coriander chutney for a change!

Ingredients

  • Matra (Dried Green Peas): 2 cups
  • Rock Salt to taste
  • Jeera powder: 1 tsp
  • Black pepper as per taste
  • Lime juice: 2-3 tsps
  • Water: as required
  • Chaat Masala: 1 tsp
  • Onion: 1 (finely chopped)
  • Tomato: 1 big (finely chopped)
  • Coriander: 2 tbsp (finely chopped)
  • Green chilies: 1-2 (optional)

Method

  • Soak dry green peas or matra overnight.
  • Strain and then steam the green peas for 15-20 min.
  • Take the cooked matra in a big mixing bowl and add chopped onion, tomato and green chilli (optional).
  • Add salt, jeera powder, pepper powder, chaat masala to it and sprinkle 2-3 spoons of lime juice over it. Mix well.
  • Garnish with chopped coriander.
  • Matra Chat is ready to eat!
       
  • Wellcure Tip: Homemade Steamer: If you do not have a steamer, here is a simple way to steam!

    Take a pan (Simple chai walla pan will do too). Add some water. Put a colander / channi with handle. Ensure this does not touch the water. Cover with a lid. Your homemade steamer is ready.

    Add your green peas in the channi / colander and steam it.

  • Dried green peas are classified as legumes. Dals are quite regular in Indian homes. However, they are best consumed either whole or soaked or steamed (and not pressure cooked).
  • Matra is high on fibre as well as nutrition.
  • Makes up for a great oil-free snack!
